The Jordanian Therapeutic Riding Society

The Society’s mission is to provide an appropriate venue for the practice of equitherapy and the full spectrum of therapeutic services associated with this form of therapy free of charge to registered special needs organizations. The Society also aims to sponsor and train prospective Jordanian athletes in the Special Olympics.

The Jordanian Society for Therapeutic Riding was officially established in 1999, continuing a program that was started in 1988 by a group of interested volunteers. Throughout its history, the Society depended on the goodwill of several private stable owners to host therapeutic sessions, known as equitherapy, and provide appropriate horses for this purpose.

The Society is a charitable organization registered with the Ministry of Social Development and is fully compliant with all government laws and regulations.

Equitherapy (literally therapy using the horse) is physical therapy that uses the unique qualities of horses as a therapy tool. Through this form of therapy people of all ages with physical or developmental disabilities can improve their physical health; improve their muscle tone and posture; increase their balance; sharpen their hand-eye coordination; improve their communication skills; and gain a sense of control and self-confidence. In equitherapy, the rhythm of the horse imitates the rider’s own pelvis movement, providing a unique feature that cannot be duplicated in a traditional physical therapy room. This can recreate the sensation of walking for people with paralyzing disabilities and can reduce or inhibit nervous spasms associated with other disabilities. Just as importantly, equitherapy offers people with disabilities or with psychosocial disorders the opportunity to participate in recreational activities that can have a direct effect on their confidence, emotional well-being, communication skills and muscle tone.

Equitherapy has been proven to help people with the following disabilities:

  • Physical Disability including:
    • Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Amputations and Reduced Limb Function
  • Sensory Disability including:
    • Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment and Sensory Integrative Dysfunction
  • Neurological Disability including:
    • Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spinal Cord Injuries, Cerebral Vascular Accidents (stroke), Functional Spinal Curvature, Down Syndrome, Mental Developmental Disabilities, Multiple Sclerosis, Spina Bifida and Development Delay
  • Learning disabilities including:
    • Autism and Attention Deficit Disorder
